Draft — pending review

This page is a draft. It hasn't had its owner and legal review yet, so it may change. Notes marked “Owner” are details still to be filled in.

The short version

  • Most of what this site remembers, like your Basecamp town, your reading settings and your game progress, stays on your device. You can clear it any time.
  • The site is set up to count visits with Google Analytics, with advertising features off. It never loads if your browser sends Global Privacy Control, and you can switch it off.
  • If you join Field Dispatch, we keep your email address to send it. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe.
  • Games and pages made for kids collect nothing that identifies a child: no analytics, no email prompts, no ads.
  • We don't sell your information.

Who we are

This policy covers henricksoutdoors.com ("Henricks Outdoors", "we", "us"), our Field Dispatch email service at list.henricksoutdoors.com, and our photo address at media.henricksoutdoors.com. The site is run by [Owner: the legal entity name. The site footer says "Henricks Media, LLC"; confirm].

What stays on your device

Many features remember things for you, like your Basecamp town, the activities you picked, your reading settings, and puzzles you're partway through. They're saved in your browser's storage on this device. They aren't sent to us, and they don't follow you to another device or browser.

This table is built from the site's own list of everything it can save, so it stays current as features are added:

You can see and clear everything on this list in Reader settings ("Clear my data"). Clearing your browser's data for this site removes it too.

A few pages also keep a short-lived copy of public data, such as a forecast, for the current browser tab. That copy is gone when you close the tab.

If you make a private jigsaw puzzle from one of your own photos, the photo stays in your browser's database on this device. It's never uploaded.

Your Basecamp town and the weather

You choose your Basecamp town from a list of US towns that's built into the site. The site doesn't ask for your device's location.

When the site shows weather for your town, your browser asks the National Weather Service (api.weather.gov) for the forecast directly, sending that town's map coordinates. The National Weather Service is a US government agency, and its own privacy policy covers those requests.

Analytics

Right now: analytics is switched off. No measurement ID is set, so Google Analytics never loads and nothing is counted. The rules below apply from the day it's switched on.

To turn it off on this device, switch off Share anonymous usage stats in Reader settings. The site remembers that choice on your device (ho:analytics).

When analytics is on, here's how it works:

  • What's counted: page views and a short, fixed list of actions (for example, finishing a puzzle or signing up for Field Dispatch), using Google Analytics 4 from Google LLC.
  • Advertising features are off. Google Signals and ad personalization are turned off. This site shows no ads.
  • Clean addresses only: we send the page's address without anything after a ? or #, so search words and shared-game details are never included. The page you came from is cleaned the same way.
  • No personal information in what we send: no email addresses, no exact locations, and nothing you type.
  • Global Privacy Control is honored: if your browser sends it, Google Analytics never loads.
  • Kids' pages send nothing, not even a page view (see "Kids and families" below).
  • Cookies: in most places, Google Analytics sets its own cookies on this site to tell one visit from another. For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the site asks Google Analytics not to use analytics cookies.

As with any request to a website, Google's servers see your device's IP address and browser details when Google Analytics loads. Google's Privacy Policy explains how Google handles them.

Field Dispatch, our email list

Right now: our list service isn't switched on yet. Until it is, the signup form opens your own email app with a message to info@henricksoutdoors.com, and nothing is sent unless you press send. The list service described below takes over when it goes live.

When you sign up for Field Dispatch or the Trail Mix weekly pack through our list service:

  • What we store: your email address, which list you joined, where on the site you signed up, which version of the signup wording you saw, whether you've confirmed or unsubscribed, and the dates of each step. We don't ask for your name.
  • Confirming: we email you a confirmation link. Nothing is sent to you until you click it. The link works for 14 days, and signups nobody confirms are deleted after 30 days.
  • Stopping automated signups: to limit repeated tries, the service keeps a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address for 24 hours, then deletes it.
  • Who sees it: the site's owner gets an email notice for each confirmed signup. We don't sell or rent the list.
  • Where it lives: on our own service at list.henricksoutdoors.com, hosted by DreamHost. Confirmation emails are sent from a henricksoutdoors.com mailbox. If we move sending to an email delivery service, we'll update this page first.
  • How to leave: every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. We keep a record that you unsubscribed, so you aren't emailed again. To have your address deleted completely, contact us (see "Your choices").

Kids and families

These features are made for kids:

On them, and on the kids' parts of pages made for everyone:

  1. No analytics identifiers or cookies. Analytics is off there. Nothing is sent, not even a page view.
  2. No email prompts or other personal data.
  3. A grown-up check before any shopping or outside link, like "Ask a grown-up: this opens Amazon."
  4. No chat, no text shared with other players, and no ads.

Scores and progress in these games are saved only on the device they're played on.

Services we use

  • Web hosting: DreamHost serves the site's pages. The site is kept ready to move to Vercel; if it moves, we'll update this page. Like most web hosts, the host's servers may keep standard access logs (IP address, the page requested, browser, and time).
  • Photos and media: served from media.henricksoutdoors.com. [Owner: confirm the media host, DreamHost now or Cloudflare R2.]
  • Email list: our own service on DreamHost (see "Field Dispatch" above).
  • Analytics: Google Analytics, when it's switched on (see "Analytics" above).
  • Weather: the National Weather Service, called by your browser.
  • Fonts and icons are served from this site itself, so no font service sees your visit.

Links to other sites, like Amazon or our family's other sites, take you to pages with their own privacy policies. See Disclosures for how some of those links earn us money.

Security

The site and the Field Dispatch service are served over encrypted connections (HTTPS). No method of sending or storing information online is perfectly secure, and we keep what we store to the minimum listed above.

Your choices

  • Clear what's saved on your device as described under "What stays on your device."
  • Switch off analytics as described under "Analytics," or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser.
  • Leave Field Dispatch with the unsubscribe link in any email.
  • Ask a question, or ask us to delete your email address: [Owner: the contact email for privacy requests].
