What we aim for
Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, on every page. In practice, that means we build to these rules:
- Readable text: strong contrast between text and background, aiming higher than the minimum for reading text.
- Big targets: buttons and links at least 44 pixels in size, and at least 48 pixels for the main controls in games and tools.
- Keyboard all the way: everything works with a keyboard, with a visible outline showing where you are.
- No rush: no timers or time limits unless you turn them on.
- Nothing hidden behind a hover: icons come with words, and nothing depends on color alone.
- Room to zoom: pages reflow at 200% zoom without scrolling sideways.
Automated accessibility checks run as part of the tests every new feature must pass before it goes live.
Reading settings
Open Reader settings to change Text size (Normal, Large or Largest), turn on Easier-to-read letters, and choose units, motion and sound. Your choices are saved on this device and apply across the site.
Help built into the games
- Trail Mix games can be played with the keyboard.
- If dragging pieces is hard, the Jigsaw has a Tap to move option in its Settings.
- There's no timer on the Jigsaw unless you turn one on.
Known limitations
- The Arcade: these are fast, visual action games. They have keyboard controls, a pause key (P), and no sound, but they need quick reactions and sight, and a screen reader can't follow the action.
- Maps: the site has no interactive maps yet. Maps are hard to use without sight, so when they arrive, this page will say what they can't do.
- Color contrast on some older pages: some category chips, buttons, and page links on the home page, guides, and the Books page don't have enough contrast yet. We're fixing them.
- Other sites: pages we link to, like booksellers or agencies, have their own accessibility, which we can't control.
